To Him Who Overcomes

Lord, give me ears to hear what Your Spirit says as I read Your Word.

" ... To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows excpet him who receives it." (Revelation 2:17)

The Lord's message to the church at Pergamos ends with a word of comfort - and some incredibly encouraging insights about what God gives to overcomers.

First, we receive His infinite resources - represented by the hidden manna. To fully understand this, we need to think about what manna was. God fed the Israelities in the wilderness supernaturally with this bread that came down from heaven - which spoke of the Lord Jesus Christ, Who would also come down from heaven. Manna was round, which spoke of Jesus' eternality. it was white, representing His purity. it lay upon the ground, showing Jesus' humility. it was picked up, foreshadowing His resurrection. it was eaten and ingested, which speaks of His life-giving ability. manna was a beautiful picture of the Lord Jesus!

So what was "the hidden manna"? Moses and the Levites were instructed to take some of the manna and put it into a golden pot which was placed in the Ark of the Covenant (Exodus 16:31-33). Then the Ark of the Covenant was placed in the Holy of Holies and no one ever saw or tasted that manna. It remained unspoiled there in that holy dwelling place. And that was a picture of the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ in heaven, in that tabernacle which God erected and not man (Hebrews 8:2).

But here in Revelation, overcomers are told they can eat of that hidden manna. This signifies feeding upon the glorified, risen Savior - partaking of all that He is and enjoying the infinite resources that now belong to us in Christ Jesus! Day by day by day we're to receive strength and sustenance and satisfaction as we feast upon that hidden manna. Are you feeding on it? You should be, for this is God's comforting promise to the overcomers.
