Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty

Lord, help me push aside every needless thought and concern as I turn my heart toward You and Your Word.

"... and around the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle ... And thy do not rest day or night, saying: "Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come." (Revelation 4:6-8)

The final part of our glimpse into the throne room of heaven highlights the praise going up to the throne - and it comes from what seems to be an unusual source. Who are these four living creatures and what do they represent?

Well, four is the number of earth, symbolic of creation. So these four creatures represent all of creation praising the Lord. And as we look further and connect this with the emerald rainbow (Revelation 4:3), we see how God is now establishing His eternal covenant.

After the flood, God made a covenant with four categories of living creatures: mankind, the beasts of the earth, the cattle and the birds. (Genesis 9:8-15) Each of these is represented here before the throne.

So we see here that God is not finished with creation - He is fulfilling His covenant. Not only is the Lord going to redeem us, He's going to redeem His creation! Don't get the idea that satan has just ruined this earth and now God is going to have to scrap it. The Bible says that all creation eagerly awaits the day the saints will be revealed (Romans 8:19-22). This earth one day is going to blossom as a rose and the glory of the Lord will cover the earth as waters cover the sea (Isaiah 11:9).

This world was created by Jesus and is sustained through Jesus (Revelation 4:11). And ultimately, it is coming to Jesus. God is still in control, and one of these days this entire creation will come under the sway of the Son of Man.
