Lord, let Your message sink deep into my heart and change my life.
"So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth" (Revelation 3:16).
There is a sin Christians commit that, figuratively speaking, makes God want to regurgitate. it is the sin of lukewarmness. When something is too cold to be hot and too hot to be cold, it's lukewarm. Think of how some beverages are good hot or cold, but when they become lukewarm they're repulsive and nauseating. That's what God is talking about here.
He is talking about a person who is saved but is a half-hearted, self-satisfied, fence-straddling Christian. They're apathetic about their sanctification, their service and their sacrifice. They're indifferent toward Scripture and the souls of others.
And their lackadaisical attitude is an affront to God. The lukewarm Christian is saying, "God, I believe in You, but You just don't enthuse me. You died to save me, but so what?" Lukewarmness is the worst form of blasphemy. It's a yawn in the face of God. If God is worth anything, He's worth everything. Don't insult Him with your half-hearted service.
God would actually rather a person be cold than lukewarm. He says it would be better for you to be completely against Him than pretending to be for Him, misrepresenting what the Christian life is meant to be. Lukewarm Christians keep so many people out of heaven. They are the alibi of sinners and the heartbreak of angels. That's why the Lord Jesus would rather have you utterly against Him than sitting on the fence.
Lukewarmness is not weakness - it is wickedness. If you feel it creeping into your life, confess it as you would any sin and repent quickly, asking God to give you an enthusiasm about serving Him. Consider this: if only ten percent of Christians today were believing and living the Word of God and living holy lives filled with joy and fervency - this world could be turned upside down and inside out for the the Lord Jesus Christ!
